Medical Restricted
License/Medical Suspension
Ohio Revised Code Section
4507.08
Cause
There are various reasons for being placed under a medical
suspension. No temporary instruction permit identification card or driver license shall be issued to, or
retained by any person who, in the opinion of the registrar, is afflicted with or
suffering from a physical or mental disability or condition that prevents him/her from
exercising reasonable and ordinary control over a motor vehicle while operating the
vehicle upon the highways.
Length
of Suspension
Until reinstated by the Bureau of
Motor Vehicles (BMV) after a satisfactory medical
statement furnished by your physician is received and/or if you are required to take a
driver license examination, upon receipt of passing examination results. See
failure of driver license
examination.
Appeal
Procedures
May request an administrative hearing by writing to the BMV within 30 days
of the date of the suspension notice is received.
Reinstatement
Requirements
A driver must submit a satisfactory
medical statement from their physician and/or submit passing examination scores
for a partial or complete driver license examination to the Bureau.
Removal
of a Medical Restriction
BMV guidelines allow for consideration to be given to
removing a medical restriction when:
We
receive a medical statement indicating medical statements are no longer
required to be submitted.
-
If an individual believes
that the restriction is no longer necessary, their doctor may send a letter stating that in
his/her professional opinion the condition does not affect the person's ability to
safely operate a vehicle and that periodic medical statements
and/or periodic testing is not necessary.
Vision Restriction Removal
If a driver wishes to change a vision
restriction and their driver license will expire within 90 days for a
non-commercial license and 180 days for a commercial license, they may
proceed to any Deputy Registrar
for vision testing. Vision restrictions will be determined after the
vision screening and the appropriate restriction changes will be made on their
renewal license. See
Vision Examination
Requirements. Renewal license fees will apply.
If the individual's driver license
will expire in more than 90 days for a non-commercial license and 180 days for a
commercial license, the individual must contact the Bureau of
Motor Vehicles for a letter of authorization and instructions for restriction
removals.
