Retention of License Plate Number

General Information
Effective October 6, 2013, the Ohio Revise Code 4503.192(A)(1) will allow applicants who are replacing their license plates to retain their current standard assigned license plate number for an additional fee.

                • If you want to obtain a new plate, you will now be able to retain your old plate number to the new design.
                • An additional $10.00 fee is due every time you select the option to retain with the purchase of a new license plate.
                • Personalized and Initial Reserve license plates are not eligible for retention. Both license plates are still assessed the additional fees of $25.00 (Initial Reserve) and $50.00 (Personalized).

The following types of transactions are eligible for retention of same plate number:

                • Renew if combined with a replace or an exchange transaction
                • Replace
                • Exchange

 

Special Plate Retention Guidelines
Below are the retention guidelines for all standard license plates valid in Ohio:

                • A standard license plate can only retained to another standard license plate
                • Most special license plates can retain to most special license plate designs
                • A Disability license plate can retain to most special license plates
                • A standard Bicentennial license plate can retain to an Ohio Pride license plate
                • A Historical license plate can retain to another Historical license plate
                • A Collector license plate can retain to another Collector license plate
                • A motorcycle license plate can retain to another motorcycle license plate
                • A Disabled motorcycle license plate can retain to another Disabled motorcycle license plate
                • A Veteran motorcycle license plate can retain to another Veteran motorcycle license plate
                • An APV license plate can retain to another APV license plate
                • Gratis license plates are not eligible
                • Apportioned license plates are not eligible

 

Registrant Eligibility
May be purchased by any Ohio motorist (some restrictions apply, see above).

 

Vehicle Information
License plate numbers may be retained on passenger vehicles, non-commercial trucks, recreational vehicles, motorcycles, house vehicles, non-commercial trailers, motorhomes, church buses, transit buses, commercial trucks, mopeds, all-terrain vehicles, and commercial trailers.

Issuance Information
Plate retention can be done at any Deputy Registrar's office, online at www.oplates.com, or by mail.

All plates will be mailed directly to the address on your vehicle registration card unless customer requests otherwise. The deputy will issue your registration card, stickers and provide you with a permit, which will allow you to operate your vehicle while your plates are being manufactured.
