Q: Can I renew online if I do not have my renewal reminder notice? How early can I renew my registration?

Yes. Your account number and fleet number are what you will need to complete your renewal. You can renew your account 90 days prior to your expiration date if it is in good standing. If the account is NOT in good standing, the system will not allow you to proceed. Please contact the IRP office for further instructions.

Q: Can I renew more than one vehicle online?

Yes. The renewal is fleet-based, so each vehicle in the fleet is included for the renewal.

Q: Can I request a different plate while renewing online?

Yes.

Q: May I renew my leased vehicle online?

Yes. A Power of Attorney may be required if the leasing company is not on file with the BMV. Please check the current list of leasing companies HERE.

Q: May I renew my non-apportioned commercial vehicle online or through the IVR (interactive voice response)?

No. The State of Ohio does not yet offer this service.

Q: How do I delete a vehicle from my account?

A vehicle can only be deleted from your account at renewal or when processing a plate transfer transaction. Please review the Carrier Manual for information on this process.

Q: Information on my renewal application is incorrect, how do I correct it?

You can update your address, contact information and vehicle information during renewal.

Q: Can I change my vehicle’s GVW if I renew online?

Weight changes are allowed for those groups already existing on your account.

Q: Can I reprint my cab card online?

No. However, online users have the ability to replace the cab card online. There is a $4.50 fee to do this replacement online and have it sent to you via regular mail.

Q: Can I renew online if I don’t currently have insurance for my motor vehicle?

No. The State of Ohio requires that each transaction include the Financial Responsibility Statement, and acknowledgement of insurance obligations, before they can move forward with the transaction.

Q: Can I use the printable confirmation as proof of registration until I receive my credentials? Is it legal to operate my vehicle if my credentials have expired but I renewed online?

No. The confirmation is not sufficient for law enforcement requirements of registration. The credentials must be with the vehicle at all times.

Q: How do I know if my transaction was successfully completed? Will I receive proof that the BMV processed my transaction?

Once the transaction is complete, an email confirmation will be sent. Once the payment is processed you will receive an email confirmation.

Q: My credentials have expired. Can I still use this system?

Yes. A carrier can renew their fleet anytime within 12 months past their registration expiration and maintain the same license plate. Submit an affidavit of "non-use" stating why the vehicle was not renewed at the time of expiration in order to be invoiced for less than 12 months.

Q: If I don’t plan to drive my vehicle, do I still have to renew the credentials?

No. Only vehicles that will be driven on the roadways require the yearly registration renewal.

Q: What documents do I need to do my renewal online?

You may need:

  • Proof of payment of Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (IRS Form 2290- Schedule 1)
  • Power of Attorney (POA)
  • Proposed Statement of Estimated Distance (if estimates being used are not from the distance chart)
  • Title (if new vehicle is being added or for an owner name change)
  • Lease Agreement (if USDOT/TIN for the motor carrier responsible for safety is changing)

Q: How long will it take to receive my new credentials? Can I have my document sent via an express mail service?

Please allow 7-10 business days from the payment date to receive your credentials via regular mail.

Our processing center can receive express mail, however, the documents will not be returned by express mail. Express mail should be sent to our physical address IRP Processing Center 2222 Dividend Dr. Columbus OH 43228.

Q: What address will my credentials be mailed to? Can I renew online if my address is different from what is on the renewal notice?

The credentials will be sent to the mailing address listed on the account at the time of payment. Two or more plates will be sent to the business address if the mailing address is a P. O. Box. Special shipping arrangements at the carrier's expense are available by contacting the Ohio IRP Processing Center directly at 1-800-477-0007.

You have the ability to update your account information as you complete your renewal transaction. To update your address during the registration year, the IRP application must be submitted to the IRP Processing Center by mail or in person at any of our four locations.

Q: I never received my renewal application. What do I do?

You may still process the renewal online or at one of the IRP locations using your account number and fleet. If you would still prefer to do a mail-in renewal, please contact the Ohio IRP Processing Center at 1-800-477-0007 to have a renewal application mailed to you.

Q: Can my fleet renewal notice be sent to me via email?

No. At this time, renewal notices are sent each month by regular mail at least 60 days prior to the expiration date.

Q: What forms of payment can I use?

Online payment can be made by credit card (MasterCard, Discover or American Express) or by debit card payment. Payments can also be made in person or by mail with check (unless otherwise noted on the invoice) or money order.

Q: Does the BMV charge an added fee to use this online transaction?

No. The Ohio BMV does not charge additional fees for renewing online. Renewal fees are the same if you renew online, by mail or at a local deputy registrar. However, there will be a fee for postage on any transaction completed online, by telephone or by mail.

Q: How is the vehicle registration fee determined?

The exact cost for your plate is not determined until your application has been processed and the fees calculated. On average, the cost for a vehicle operating at 80,000 pounds is between $1200 and $1600 for a full year plate.

Q: When a vehicle is added, are the fees pro-rated?

Yes. Registration fees are prorated by month.

Q: How do I request a refund?

Submit your refund request to The Ohio IRP Processing Center. For additional information regarding refund requests, please review the Ohio IRP Carrier Manual or contact the Ohio IRP Processing Center at 1-800-477-0007.

Q: What is same day credentialing?

Same day credentialing gives the carrier the ability to process a transaction online, submit the supporting documents and pay for the transaction. Upon payment the carrier will be emailed their Temporary Authority(s) TA(s) while the IRP office verifies the transaction and any supporting documents prior to releasing the permanent credential.

Any IRP account that is in good standing can process a transaction online. There is no additional cost and no additional documents are required to process a transaction.

Q: Is same day credentialing eligible for staggered or biennial registration? What about multi-year or permanent registration?

The staggered registration option is available for same day credentialing. However, due to the reporting and calculation of fees for Apportioned vehicles, this can only be done as a 1 year registration.

Q: How do I send required documents if I did not use the attachment feature?

A: Users can still send a required document using any of the following:

Q: I paid the invoice but did not receive my Temporary Authority(s) TA(s)?

Check your Spam/Junk folders for your TA(s). If you’re still unable to retrieve your TA(s) contact the IRP Processing Center for assistance at 1-800-477-0007.

Q: How can I get a 45-day Temporary Authority?

The option to obtain a 45-day Temporary Authority is presented throughout the online process based on the transaction type.

Q: My temporary authority expired, what can I do?

Contact the Ohio IRP Processing Center at 800-477-0007 for instructions on what is required to complete your Temporary Authority.

Q: What should I do if my plates need to be replaced?

Instructions on how to process a "Replacement Credential" transaction can be found HERE or by contacting the Ohio IRP Processing Center at 1-800-477-0007.

Q: Can I renew my driver license online?

No. Please visit your local Deputy Registrar office for this service.

Q: How does the BMV protect my personal information? Will my credit card information be protected?

Yes. To ensure security for your transaction, you must use a Web browser with secure socket layer (SSL) capability. Several laws, including the Federal Driver Privacy Protection Act (DPPA), the Ohio DPPA (R.C. 4501.27), the Ohio Public Records Act (R.C. 149.43), and other statutes, rules, and regulations cover your registration information.

Q: Will the information I provide be shared or sold?

The BMV does release information to government agencies, for vehicle safety recalls, to courts, for limited research purposes, to insurance companies, to towing companies, to private investigators, to CDL employers, and for other public safety purposes, all in accordance with the restrictions and limitations imposed by law.

Q: What vehicle type qualifies for company logo plates?

Ohio vehicles registered with apportioned plates may qualify for the company logo plates at this time.

Q: Who can apply for the company logo plates? What is the additional cost for company logo plates?

Companies that have a minimum of 50 vehicles in their fleet are eligible to establish a special plate for the vehicles in their company.

Any new, exchange or replacement logo plate is $6.00 in addition to any applicable registration fees.

Q: Are the company logo plates eligible for staggered or biennial registration? What about multi-year or permanent registration?

No. Due to the reporting and calculation of fees for Apportioned vehicles, this can only be done as a 1 year registration.

Q: Can company logo plates be personalized?

No. These license plates are not eligible for personalization at this time.

Q: Can I transfer or exchange a company logo plate?

Yes. Standard rules for transfer of license plates will apply. A company logo plate can be exchanged for a standard apportioned plate at any time for $6.50 plus applicable registration fees.

Q: Do I have to purchase 50 company logo plates every order?

No. Fifty license plates must be purchased within a year of availability. Once the requirement of 50 license plates is met you may order more at your discretion.

Q: How does my company start the logo plate approval process?

Complete the Company Logo Plate Application and submit all required documents as specified. Upon receipt of these items and approval from the BMV, a sample license plate will be manufactured and sent to you for your approval. We require a response of your approval of the sample plate within 14 business days.

Q: How long is the logo plate approval process? Once approved how long does it take to receive my logo plate after my transaction(s) are paid?

The logo plate approval process is approximately 45 days from the initial application. Once approved, you should receive your logo plate within 7-10 days.

Q: What is vector art? What are PMS colors?

Vector art is art that can be scaled or modified without losing the quality of the image or resolution. When artwork is in vector format (such as an illustrator file (.ai or .eps), it allows you to increase or decrease the size of the graphic without compromising the integrity of the original image. The end result is a crisp, clear image no matter what the final size is.

PMS stands for “Pantone Matching System” and it is used by the printing industry. This system is numbered so if you pick PMS 280 (e.g., the color blue), the printer can match the exact blue that you want.

Q: If our power unit is registered with a company logo plate and the owner operator breaks the lease, what happens to our company logo plate?

Please follow the current IRP practice which requires a company make all attempts to retrieve the Company Logo plate back which may include but not limited to filing a police report or complete an Ohio IRP Application for a replacement credential and pay the associated fees.

Q: Can I have my apportioned logo plates mailed directly to an Ohio IRP Office location for pick-up?

Yes. At the time of application, you will be required to submit the alternate mailing address of the IRP office of your choosing. This address will be used to deliver the company logo plates. Unfortunately, the company logo plates cannot be re-mailed from an Ohio IRP Office once they are received at that location.
