    Gratis Driver License

    Eligible veterans can obtain an Ohio driver license (new, renewal, or duplicate) at no cost.

    Qualifications

    • Veteran of the United States armed forces.
    • Have a 100% service-connected disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
    • Be eligible for driver license issuance (i.e., have a license on record or complete all required testing, have no suspensions, present any documents that may be required for issuance)

    Restrictions

    • Documentation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or Department of Defense (DoD) has to be provided during every license transaction (new, renewal, or duplicate).
    • In-person application at a BMV deputy registrar license agency is required.

    Documents Needed

    • Applicants need one of the following:
      • Letter from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, dated within the past year stating a 100% service-connected disability rating.
        OR
      • DoD ID card stating 100% disabled American veteran.
    • Any other documents needed for the first issuance, renewal, or duplicate driver license transaction.

    Process

    • Visit the nearest BMV deputy registrar license agency location with all necessary documents to complete the transaction.
    • Allow up to 28 days to receive the requested driver license in the mail.
